Nation Branding

Madi Ohrman Dr. Green Eurovision 21 March 2019 Nation Branding            The Eurovision Song contest is an international song contest watched by millions of viewers around the world. Some countries use Eurovision to promote their country by exposing their culture, expressing its political stances, or using the opportunity to educate individuals who are unfamiliar with their country. In three-minute performances countries are able to use nation branding, a mechanism which aims to build reputation of countries (Jordan, 2014). Some nation branding directly correlates to their national identity. Other times, there are misalignments between the two. In this blog post I will be analyzing Estonia’s use of nation branding in Eurovision. Does the country take Eurovision seriously? Do the performances best exemplify the country? I will answering these questions in this blog post. In my first blog post I defined national ident...

Diversity

Blog Post 2: Estonia on Stage Diversity is defined by “being composed of different elements”(Merriam Webster ). Diversity can be displayed in many different ways; for example, singing or performances. In this blog post I will be analyzing the 2017 and 2018 Estonia Eurovision performances, explaining how these performances show or don’t show diversity of the country. I analyzed the songs “Verona” (2017, Estonia)  and “La Forza” (2018, Estonia), I broke them down into four categories: lyrics, production, performance, and identity. “Verona” (2017, Estonia) was performed by Koit Toome and Laura, with the music and lyrics written by Sven Lohmus. Looking at the lyrics, I imagined the song to be about love, but more specifically a break-up love song. The scenario is about two people who are so madly in love with each other which ironically is what drives them apart. The reference to “Romeo and Juliet” (“Verona” 2017)  fits perfectly into this song because the two characters ...

Defining National Identity: Estonia

Hello everyone and welcome back to 3minutesEstonia! What makes up a person’s identity? We all have unique aspects that make up our own identity. For example, your name, religion, culture, race, and so on. So what makes up a nation’s identity? According to Anna Triandafyllidou, a Senior Research Fellow at the Hellenic Foundation for European and Foreign Policy, national identity is similar to aspects that make up our own identity (i.e. culture, language, etc.). These similarities give people a sense of belonging within a nation ( Triandafyllidou, 2001, p. 597). In other words, a nation’s identity can be described as similar traits that bring a group of people together. There are many aspects that make Estonia unique. In this blog post I will be explaining the different ways in which Estonia’s national identity is portrayed through their history and language . Feldman explains, “Estonia’s identity is represented as an identity under a constant existential threat from the neighbou...

3 min Briefing Estonia

Here is a three minute video about the country Estonia.

Welcome!

Welcome to 3minuteEstonia,  Here you will learn about Estonia and its participation in Eurovision. Estonia is a beautiful country bordered by Latvia and Russia. I chose this country because I was intrigued on the technology they used during their performance at the 2018 Eurovision contest.  Estonia has participated in the Eurovision contest twenty-three times since its first entry in 1994. Elina Nechayeva performed "La forza" which is composed by Mihkel Mattisen, and Timo Vendt. Nechayeva was known for her outfit this year as light projections were beamed on her dress. It measured about 23 feet and weigh about 17 pounds, it took eight people to help her get on stage. However, this tactic worked for Estonia as they finished eighth out of the twenty-six countries that competed.  Citations: Estonia in the Eurovision Song Contest. (2018).
